Individual Sessions
Each electrolysis appointment typically lasts 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your personal goals and the size of the treatment area. Smaller areas, like the upper lip or eyebrows, may be quicker, while larger areas, such as the legs or back, may require more time. During your consultation, your electrologist will recommend the ideal session length to help you achieve effective results.
Overall Treatment Timeline
Electrolysis is a proven method of permanent hair removal, but it's not a one-time treatment. Multiple sessions are needed to fully eliminate hair based on factors such as:
previously used methods for hair removal
hereditary influences
hormonal conditions or medications
diet, stress, and overall tolerance
treatment area
Some individuals with smaller treatment areas may notice progress early on. In certain cases, near-complete results can be achieved within 8 to 12 months. Full clearance is more commonly achieved within up to 24 months, especially with consistent treatment and no complicating factors. Timelines vary based on individual physiology, hair type, and treatment history.

The number of sessions varies from person to person. Factors like hair type, hair growth cycles, the treatment area, your tolerance, and your overall health—including genetics, hormones, stress levels, and medications—can all play a role.
During your consultation, your electrologist will evaluate your unique needs and create a personalized plan to help you achieve smooth, lasting results.
Electrolysis works best on hair in its active growth stage. Since hair grows in cycles, each session can only treat the hairs that are actively growing at that time. That’s why a series of treatments is needed—to catch every follicle at the right moment.
With consistent sessions, you’ll notice less visible regrowth. Over time, hair stops growing altogether, as electrolysis permanently destroys the cells responsible for hair growth.
To keep hair less visible in between electrolysis sessions, shaving is a great option. It helps hair appear less noticeable. When done with a sharp, clean razor, it minimizes skin irritation. Trimming with scissors is also an option to reduce visibility.
Many clients worry that shaving makes hair grow back thicker or darker, but that's a myth. Shaving only removes the portion of hair above the skin, and it doesn't affect the follicle underneath. The regrowth may appear coarser simply because it has a blunt tip, not because the hair has changed.
Bleaching hair before electrolysis is not recommended. Bleaching products can cause skin sensitivity and irritation, which may interfere with treatment comfort and effectiveness.
Plucking and waxing force hairs out from the skin, which can disrupt the hair's natural anatomy beneath the skin. These methods can also cause trauma to the follicle, leading to inflammation, irritation, ingrown hairs, and even scarring.
To set yourself up for the best results with electrolysis, it's best to stop plucking and waxing at least 3 to 4 weeks before your sessions. Allowing hair to grow naturally helps ensure the follicles are in their optimal state for treatment—intact, visible, and ready to respond.
